Summary on Grant Application Form |
A warranty is a contractual agreement between a product manufacturer (seller) and a consumer (buyer) which requires the seller to rectify all failures occurring within the warranty period W. Under a non-renewing free replacement warranty, no charge is made to the consumer for these rectification actions (either repairs or replacements by new products) and after each action the product is covered only for the remaining part of the original warranty period.Increasing competition in the market place, however, is resulting in sellers needing to offer more and more attractive warranties. Possible options for a seller are (1) to give a longer basic warranty period W, or (2) to keep the same basic period but attach an extended period of length L where the buyer contributes in some way to the cost of the rectification actions (we term this a 'flexible' warranty). Introducing preventive maintenance might also be worthwhile fo the seller and/or buyer in both options. However, any modelling requires a realistic assessment of the nature and quality of data likely to be available. The aim will be to structure the research programme to model and thereby determine the optimal preventive maintenance schedule and also the optimal strategies for both the seller and the buyer when the seller offers a number of different choices in the extended period (e.g. different types of cost sharing or a maximum budget for rectification actions each with different parameters).
