|
The overall aim is to complete a range of visits to selected Universities and major companies in the US, in order to benchmark new technologies and research themes underpinning the continuous evolution of 'high end' complex products and manufacturing operations, especially those utilising Internet enabled tools and methods in the context of e-business and product lifecycle management to effect overall cycle time compression. The scope of the investigation will be to explore the interrelationships between the following generic themes in the context of designing and manufacturing complex products under reducing life-cycle conditions; (i) new, evolutionary solid modelling design practice, (including digital mock up, virtual product modelling, tolerancing & configuration to reflect process), (ii) low cost, flexible process modelling, automation and quality control (6 sigma), (iii) new practices associated with metrology developments in laser tracking (process capability) together with tolerance management and (iv) the internet as a vital ingredient of supply network operation (logistics & connectivity in the context of product development), particularly in the global supply chain for small to medium sized enterprises (SME's). The main deliverable will be the writing of a concise report, which will be disseminated to U K industry, academia and government agencies.
