Summary on Grant Application Form
Within our group, a substantial amount of ground work has been made into the synthesis of monomers bearing strongly redox-active sub-units. We have shown that such compounds are readily polymerised using electrochemical and chemical coupling techniques. This proposal highlights several strategies towards an extension of this work through the preparation of a range of polymers and oligomers based on thiophene related systems. Our strategy is to incorporate strong electron donors or acceptors (which are both stable and reversible to redox processes), into the backbone of polythiophene chains. The contribution of the redox-active sub-units to the overall electronic behaviour of the oligomer/polymer cannot be easily predicted. We, therefore, intend to perform an initial study into the photophysical properties of these materials to elucidate the physical relationship between the conjugated polymer chain and the additional electron donor/acceptor components. These measurements are essential for the development of our materials towards possible device applications in the field of photonics.
