The research proposal centres on a range of numerical experiments , based on models for the ignition of weakly reactive materials by nearby hot spots. The results of the numerics will be the object of systematic diagnostics to inform and supplement analytical approaches, based on appropriate asymptotic techniques (similar to that already developed for studies of strongly reactive materials where reactant depletion is ignored to leading order).In practical cases, ignition and subsequent self-sustaining combustion may be accompanied by physical destruction of material, leading to a growth in the hot spot size. Thus the numerical methodology must be able to cope with the appearance of an ignition event (defined as very steep gradients of temperature, in time and space) and a moving boundary of the material as it erodes.The numerical experiments will be planned to cover parameter ranges of practical importance, both in the area of hazard prevention (accidental fires), the controlled formation of new compounds by filtration, and the removal by controlled detonation of unwanted explosives. A key output will be practical guidelines relevant to best industrial practice for all of these cases.
