Semi-conducting polymers offer the prospect of producing cheap, solution-processed photovolatic devices. We have developed a technique for obtaining efficient charge generation and collection in conjugated polymers by using phase-separated two-component systems to achieve a distributed heterojunction at which charge separation can occur. In this proposal, we intend to develop efficient photovoltaic devices based on this concept, using new polyfluorene-based polymers whose electronic properties are readily tuneable. We will study the morphology of the phase separation in these polymers using a range of techniques, including atomic force microscopy. We will then optimise the photovoltaic performance by controlling the polymer composition and processing conditions to achieve the most favourable structure. We expect to be able to achieve solar power conversion efficiencies in excess of 5% in an all-polymer, thin-film, solution-processed solid state device.
