Summary on Grant Application Form
The project seeks to establish the commonalities, strengths and weaknesses of current design activity performance measurement practice, and define their relation within product development strategy. The results from this will be used to research the phenomenon of design activity performance measurement, the metrics involved and their structure and relation to the design activity, performance improvement and product development objectives. A methodology will be developed which enables the utility of past performance behaviour, subsequently learning the many interactions of past processes: to support the modelling of future performance behaviour. The generation of design process knowledge, regarding performance behaviour, realises the potential for strategic learning and design process re-engineering and will provide the capability for organisations to predict design process performance, initiate 'what if' scenarios and to support process optimisation. The research will be cross correlated within the industrial partners, generic results determined and disseminated to the manufacturing and wider performance improvement communities.
