Humic substances are naturally occurring dissolved organic matter that causes a yellow/brown colour in water. They are common in surface waters used for the supply of potable and industrial water. Their presence is undesirable for aesthetic, health and economic reasons. Treatment options are available but are less than satisfactory in terms of performance and cost. The proposed research will investigate novel inorganic adsorption media for the removal of humic substances. The aims of the research are to improve treatment performance, reduce capital and operating costs and further understanding of the nature of humic substances and their removal by adsorption. An experimental study of novel inorganic adsorption media will be conducted. Batch and pilot plant tests will be carried out to evaluate the performance of different media under a range of operating conditions. Factors to be investigated will include media type, media size, media depth, surface loading rate, raw water characteristics and operating time. In-situ regeneration methods will be developed. A novel mathematical model of adsorption removal will be developed based on a multiple size fraction approach building on previous work at UCL. The model will be used to predict the removal of humic substances by adsorption onto inorganic media. The model will be made available as a design tool for full-scale treatment.
