Summary on Grant Application Form |
The processing of multi-phase materials is characterised by the interaction of complex non-linear phenomena such as strong coupling between the liquid, solid and gaseous phases of the material, extremely large strains and frictional contact. Considering the solid skeleton velocity, liquid pore pressure and the degree of liquid saturation as the primary variables, a consistent three field set of governing differential equations can be established. Examples of industrial applications include juice extraction and food paste processes, the maceration of tea leaves and paper production. The modelling of some of these processes also necessitates the treatment of thermal behaviour, since heat transfer plays an important role in controlling liquid/gas phase changes and the migration of chemical species. The primary aim of the proposed research is to develop an efficient and robust computational framework for modelling of processing of multi-phase materials including solid, liquid and gaseous phases and accounting also for liquid/gas phase change phenomena. The computational framework will be applied to simulations of industrial problems in the food processing, paper manufacturing a materials handling sectors.
