Summary on Grant Application Form |
Considerable progress has been made in the field of small molecule chiral catalysis in recent years, in several cases these have been derived from achiral analogues. As yet no general method exists for the enantioselective epoxidation of olefins, nor for the specific asymmetric epoxidation of terminal olefins. Success has been achieved in the epoxidation of a range of olefin substrates, including terminal olefins, using metal complexes of 1,4,7-triazacyclonone based ligands. The development of chiral analogues is therefore both timely and logical. The project will investigate the synthesis and application of novel chiral analogues of the 1 ,4,7-triazacyclononane macrocyclic ligand, particularly in the asymmetric epoxidation of unfunctionalised olefins. The synthetic strategy for ligand synthesis is very general and will facilitate the synthesis of a wide range of structural motifs. Catalyst screening will then be performed in a high throughput manner. In this way a structure activity profile can be rapidly established for catalyst activity so that improved second generation catalysts can be prepared. Finally, ligands will be mounted on solid supports to probe differences in catalytic activity and asymmetric induction compared to their homogeneous analogues.
