Summary on Grant Application Form |
The object is to develop a methodology for the prediction of fatigue crack propagation rate and fatigue lifetime in surface engineered aerospace materials. Two surface engineering treatments will be considered shot peening. To evaluate the model, fatigue tests of surface engineered 2024 and 7150 aluminium alloys will be conducted. A servohydraulic testing system for in situ testing under either an optical or acoustic microscope will be used. The possibilities of healing fatigue damage by surface engineering treatments will be explored by testing previously fatigue damaged specimens which subsequently have been peened or re-peened.
