Summary on Grant Application Form |
Following on from the successful development of an electron thermometer in a recent ROPA grant, we wish to investigate the thermal and noise properties of mesoscopic devices. These studies will be carried out in conjunction with conventional conductance measurements, with the aim of providing definitive evidence for the existence of novel states due to electron-electron interactions.Preliminary studies of a quantum wire show that the Mott relation (which relates the electrical and thermal measurements) shows signs of breaking down at the point where a 0.7 structure is measured in conductance. This provides the exciting possibility that thermal measurements may unambiguously demonstrate the importance of electron-electron interactions. Measurements of shot noise, in collaboration with Saclay, will provide corroboration of these results. The calibrated electron thermometer will be exploited in studies of hot-electron relaxation in the presence of a quantising magnetic field, and the phonon wind.
