Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal requests funding to monitor the dilute solution and/or melt local dynamics of cis-1,4-polyisoprene , cis-1,4-polybutadiene, vinyl-1,2- polybutadiene, and polystyrene at pressures up to 3000 atm using time-resolved optical spectroscopy[TROSI . The proposal is motivated by (a) the importance of pressure within polymer processing and polymer application (b) the poor understanding of the pressure dependence of a polymer's mechanical properties and dynamics relative to the temperature dependence of these quantities. Subsequently, increased insight into the pressure dependence of polymers, especially on the molecular level, is currently being sought by industrialists. (c)The scarcity of experimental data which directly probes the pressure dependence of polymer dynamics within well characterised samples especially at the segmental level. The Leeds Polymer group has recently invested 225k towards the purchase of a majority of the TROS equipment needed for high pressure segmental polymer dynamics to be monitored. This acquisition has allowed some early validation and pilot studies to be performed and this proposal will allow the momentum of this burgeoning line of research to continue. The laser facilities to be employed by this work are located in-house and were purchased via EPSRC GR/K55486.
