Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Purser furnace is a small-scale tube furnace where steady state combustion conditions can be created which replicate the behaviour of fully developed fires. The apparatus will be used to study the combustion toxicity of burning polymers under different fire conditions, particularly the most lethal, underventilated fires. Oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide and hydrogen cyanide will be continuously monitored. Other gases will be determined as required by GC or GC-MS. The effect of these fire conditions will be studied in relation to the evolution of carbon monoxide, and hydrogen cyanide, for the range of common polymeric materials and their fire retarded composites. The data obtained will be used to improve the understanding of toxic gas formation from burning polymers, inform the development of flame retarded, reduced combustion toxicity materials, and input into predictive models for fire hazard assessment. The Purser furnace will also be evaluated as a means of assessing the different aspects of the flammability hazards of materials under the full range of fire conditions.
