The dynamic response of Coriolis meters to two types of flow will be investigated:(i) sudden start/stop of flow, for batch flow applications (ii) low frequency pulsations which relates to diaphragm (or similar) pumps used in process industries. The tools to be used are: theoretical analysis (straight tube meter), simulation by finite element modelling of complex geometry meters (starting with the straight tube case, for validation against the theoretical results), and experiment. Tests will be run on meters of five different geometries and two sizes. The use of an independent algorithm to measure the phase difference from the two sensor signals will allow differentiation between effects due to the meter tube motions and those due to the signal processing (for phase difference) implemented by the manufacturer. Meter characteristics which are generic, i.e independent of meter geometry and size, will be identified. Preliminary indications are that meter dynamic response is very limited but results from the theory will provide the basis for a substantially improved response. This would then enable the development of a new generation of meters, suitable for a wide range of dynamic conditions.
