Summary on Grant Application Form
Since the outlawing of halons equally efficient flame suppressants have been sought as replacements. These would ideally be equally efficient. non-toxic and environmentally benign. Recent studies have shown that iron atoms appear to have the same mechanism as the halon fire suppressants and that any compound which can deliver iron atoms to a flame is an effective flame inhibitor. We propose to identify spectroscopic markers for iron compounds (various hydroxides) which are thought to be important in these flames. Having identified these markers we propose to use them to measure absolute absorption coefficients so that concentrations of these molecules may be measured spectroscopically. This will allow us to measure directly the rates of production and destruction of these compounds and the dependence of these rates on temperature.
