The project will involve processing dynamic response data of the Second Severn Crossing cable-stayed bridge, which was extensively monitored by the Principal Investigator during construction and for the first three years of service. A large database exists but to date relatively few data have been processed in detail. In particular, unique video recordings of bridge motion are available for analysis using the state-of-the-art Computer Vision System developed at Bristol. The study will concentrate on assessing the variability of the parameters describing the dynamic performance, with a view to establishing the accuracy to which they can be determined and their variation with loading, temperature and state of construction. This will have two principal applications:- Model updating -establishing the extent to which site data may be used for updating finite element models of such structures. If viable, this could enable improved predictions of the behaviour of bridges at later stages of construction and when complete, from an early stage of construction. It could also provide accurate models of bridges in service to assist in identifying any changes with time or the effects of modifications.- Structural Health Monitoring -establishing relationships of variations of response due to known factors and the range of values of parameters which can be expected in normal conditions would enable abnormal changes to be identified, for example due to deterioration or damage to the structure.
