This Network will create a unique grouping of academics, clinicians and industrialists, which will improve both the effectiveness of technology transfer and development of new research initiatives in dentistry. The partners chosen have proven records in the introduction of new technologies and have established links with industry, and represent a balanced mix of both clinical and scientific researchers. It will facilitate dissemination and exploitation of new technologies, which will provide a proactive influence on future directions of research. The network members will aim to exert a degree of peer review over the science content at organised workshops and this activity will be complimented by the setting up of a technology transfer in dentistry Web site. A forum will be created to generate a broader and stronger driver for improved industry/academic links. In the medium term, the network will enable teams to be created which will bid for dentally related funding in areas such as Innovative Manufacturing Initiative (IMI), Faraday partnerships, EPSRC grant initiatives and European programmes. The partnerships will serve to inform and involve the general dental practitioner, the end user, in the nature of new emerging technologies. This will improve innovation and increase the quality of patient care. Overall an increased performance in dental technological research will occur which will result in expanded activity in a major global market.
