The use of supercritical CO2 (scCO2) as an environmentally benign solvent for polymer synthesis has shown great promise in recent years. However, this technology has some intrinsic limitations, especially in relation to the high pressures and expensive stabilisers which are generally required. Also, the use of scCO2 has so far been limited to the synthesis of a relatively narrow range of polymeric materials, mostly by free-radical dispersion polymerisation. This research programme aims to expand the use of scCO2 to the techniques of suspension polymerisation, emulsion polymerisation, inverse emulsion polymerisation, and high-internal phase emulsion templating. We also plan to explore and develop the use of analternative dense gas solvent (HFC134a) which can be used at much lower operating pressures than CO2. The materials which we will target will include macroporous polymer beads, highly cross-linked latex particles, water-soluble polymers, and emulsion-templated cellular polymers. Our aim is to achieve fine control over materials properties by tuning variables such as pressure, surfactant morphology, and emulsion phase behaviour.
