Small satellite earth stations feature small, non linear power amplifiers and require the absolute maximum of power efficiency coupled with constraints on spectral spreading and occupied bandwidth. In the proposed system, the amplifier will be operated at maximum power with pulse shaping which is time varying and message dependent. Additionally, a non linear Turbo code will be used to achieve both coding gain and a degree of spectral control. This combination in the transmitter will necessitate the use of an oversampled iterative decoder in the receiver. The performance of different arrangements will be evaluated for a range of modulation methods so as to determine the best performance advantage compared to the current standards of modulation and coding. The proof of concept research will be based upon mathematical analysis, computer modelling using digital signal processing based receiver architecture.
