The design of tubular framework structures (e.g. offshore oil and gas platforms) for extreme loads is still predominantly effected via three-dimensional beam element analyses without accurate consideration of the joints, despite the knowledge that joint failure and associated non-linear (elastic-plastic) response can contribute significantly. Although linear elastic approaches for incorporating the effects of local joint deformations in framework analyses, via local joint flexibility matrices, have been developed, the extension to non-linear, elastic-plastic behaviour is a significantly more difficult task. This project seeks to address the latter issue by investigating the feasibility of incorporating elastic-plastic joint behaviour in framework analyses. This will draw upon previous work of the investigators, which utilises a method based on complementary work to predict the force-displacement characteristics of joints for any combination of applied loads. Validation will be carried out using either existing test results or computational results for simple plane frameworks. The study will review existing linear elastic approaches and then select the most appropriate for extension to elastic-plastic behaviour. The main thrust of the project will be to investigate the viability of extending such a linear elastic approach to elastic-plastic behaviour via the existing prediction procedure of the investigators.
