Chirp sub-bottom profilers are acoustic devices that use a known and repeatable sweep (2 - 8 kHz) to produce high resolution (decimetre vertical resolution) cross-sections of the sea bed. Southampton University has been successfully applying 2D Chirp systems to a range of geological and archaeological problems for the last 6 years. Here we request funding for the design, manufacture and testing of a 3D Chirp sub-bottom profiler that will fully sample the top 15 m of a sediment volume beneath the sea bed. We propose to develop the system in collaboration with GeoAcoustics Limited (a U.K. SME, who will provide 18,000 cash support). We have already obtained 124,500 support from the MOD through the Joint Grant Scheme.The system proposed will be the first true 3D chirp system and the development requires the solution of a number of technical challenges. The initial design outline enables: the deployment of a complex system from a small survey vessel; the precise positioning of both source and receiver to facilitate the collection of a true (not spatially aliased) 3D volume; the integration of the navigational and processed chirp data into an appropriate SEGY format; and finally the development of processing and interpretation methodologies appropriate for 3D Chirp data.Funding is requested for 52% of the total costs, to cover the development and testing of the 3D chirp system, a research assistant based at Southampton University, and the investigation of two science problems in Marine Archaeology and Structural Geography.
