The goal of this project is to reduce rework in systems engineering projects by reducing the number of decisions made at an early stage in a project that results in subsequent rework. Our hypothesis is that rework can be reduced by providing support for decision management and by exposing the decision architecture of a project. Managers may then assess the impact of their decisions on other decisions that have been made and decisions that will be made in the future. Furthermore, we will support decision patterns which will allow managers to understand stereotypical sequences of decisions that have to be made. Providing this support will, we believe, improve the quality of decisions and hence reduce the number of decisions that have to be changed.The project has 4 main activities - fieldwork to better understand decisions made in industry and their impact on rework, the semantic modelling of decisions to create a decision architecture and decision patterns and to link these to business goals and risks, the development of demonstrator software systems for managing decisions made in the early stages of systems engineering projects (requirements formulation and technology selection) and system evaluation.The results of the project will be extensions to decision theory to include the concepts of decision architectures and decision patterns and a prototype software system to support decision capture from meetings and decision management.
