Summary on Grant Application Form
To carry out speculative synthesis chemistry in order to investigate whether new structural families based on linked (non-oxo) tetrahedra can be produced. Specific systems to be studied include pure fluoride linked structures based on small fluorocations such as LiF43-, BeF42- and BF4-, materials with these ions linked to small oxounits such as BO3, choroanions such as MCI42- where M is a first row transition metal, Zn, Mg and nitrido/oxonitrido compounds produced by conversion of oxotetrahedral anions. A variety of synthetic methods will be used with the aim of demonstrating the existence and extent of these new materials.
