Summary on Grant Application Form |
This short programme is a speculative attempt to draw together a couple of strands of research into the development of a technique designed to improve the temporal resolution with which X-ray pulses from laser-plasma can be measured to better than 100fs a more than three fold improvement. The consequences for our understanding of radiation from dense plasma may be very significant. In short what we propose is that a dense plasma created by irradiation of Al or Mg film will emit line radiation from He-like and H-like species. Kieffer et al have already shown that this can last for less than 1ps with appropriate irradiance conditions. We will use a second synchronised pulse, derived from the same oscillator to irradiate the rear of the target creating many fast electrons. These will propagate into the plasma region and give up energy to plasmons. These plasmons will interact with the emitting ions to form satellite lines either side of emission lines. Since the fast electrons give up energy within 100fs the satellites are only visible if the pulses are close to coincident in time. Thus by walking the beams in time we can create a sort of auto-correlation giving duration of the line emission to within 100fs resolution.
