Summary on Grant Application Form
Impending changes to the international standards by which induction motor efficiency is measured and declared, has thrown the spot-light once more on to stray losses. The proposed change is from a procedure in which 0.5% of input power is assigned to stray load loss, to one in which stray loss is measured during testing. This implies that manufactures who can minimise these losses will be able to reap the benefit in terms of higher value for the efficiency declared in their catalogues. In this project the applicants will examine each of the four main components of stray load loss in turn. The components in question being (1) additional loss due to interbar currents (2) rotor surface loss (3) pulsation loss and (4) high-frequency cage loss. The applicants will use careful experimental measurements to substantiate theoretical models which will be used in turn to study the underlying phenomena. This work will lead to the development of loss models that are suitable for every day use in the design office. Most of the experimental measurements for the above work will be based on one particular model of 7.5kW 4-pole motor. This will be done in order to reduce the number of variables in the experimental programme and to enable each set of measurements to support the next. In the final stage of the project the applicants will extend their experimental investigation to embrace a wider range of motors in order to validate the loss calculation algorithms.
