Summary on Grant Application Form |
The refractory or recalcitrant fraction of NOM has been identified as the source of trihalomethane (THM) in treated water. Current water treatment processes rely mainly on the adsorption and coagulation properties of metal hydroxides to effect removal of NOM. This long established technology, originally optimised for turbidity and colour removal, has been re-optimised over the past 20 years in order to maximise NOM removal. Despite this, it is unlikely that the current best practice will meet emerging regulations and guidelines for 2004 and later. This three-year study, arises from our current strong collaboration with North West Water, built under initial WITE feasibility funds, to identify novel colloid and surface science routes for enhanced removal of refractory NOM. The extended study will build on our growing intellectual expertise in the colloid science of water treatment arising from the excellent links formed with North West Water, Yorkshire Water and Cranfield University where parallel studies on NOM characterisation are in progress. The research programme will compromise two major routes of investigation; (a) Identification of novel polymeric and /or polymeric/solid adsorbent combinations as additional adsorbents, selected to target the refractory NOM, and (b) Oxidation of the refractory NOM to render it more amenable to adsorption by conventional coagulants.
