|
The proposed network in nano-optical microscopy will bring together UK research groups engaged in the development and application of Scanning Near-fields Optical Microscopy (SNOM) and associated techniques (such as Shear-Force Microscopy). These have proven to be potentially powerful techniques for application in chemistry, physics, materials and the life sciences, for the study of materials properties and chemistry down to nanometres dimensions. The network will provide an open forum to encourage the transfer of ideas and techniques and foster new collaborations in the UK community, which spans a wide range of disciplines across university departments, government labs and industry. Given that this is a difficult area of research and these promising techniques are still far from maturity, a common interdisciplinary meeting ground will be of great value in speeding up their development and their promotion as routine labora5tory tools for more widespread application, as well as serving to encourage excellence in research and improve the UK's position in the field. Regular six-monthly meetings will be held to bring researchers together and enable the dissemination of results within the community, raising awareness of new advances in the field, both in the UK and overseas. Students and postdoctoral researchers will be given funding for research visits and to attend international conferences and be given the opportunity to present the results of their work within the supportive environment of the network meetings. A network web-site will provide a focus for UK Research in the field.
