Chemical coagulants are used widely in the UK and internationally in the treatment of water and wastewater. Preparation and use of pre-polymerised Al/Fe coagulants have been extensively addressed, and their superior performance has been demonstrated. In addition to this, the adsorption properties of natural clay minerals together with their abundance on the earth make them strong candidates for the removal of synthetic organic matter and heavy metals from water and wastewater. The proposed research concerns the development of a new and potentially more efficient and cost effective coagulant namely polymeric Al/Fe modified clay coagulant. The study will develop different methods of preparing, and determining the properties of, the modified-clay coagulants in the University of Surrey. The coagulation performance of the selected new coagulants will be evaluated at the laboratories and a pilot plant in Korea, in order to assess the removal efficiency of the targeted pollutants, ie humic acids, chlorinated hydrocarbons (eg THMs), heavy metals (eg Pb and Hg) and emulsified oils from industry effluents. On the basis of this the method of preparing the Al/Fe modified clay coagulant will be optimised.This research will be fully in collaboration with Taejon National University of Technology in Korea. As a consequence of this, a partnership between the two universities will be formally established, the budget of the research is to be significantly reduced, and a potential added-value could be brought into the University of Surrey (UK), if the new coagulant can be successfully developed and explored commercially into Korea/International market.
