Summary on Grant Application Form |
The purchase of a customised Raman spectrometer with microscope capability is proposed in order to extend and enhance the research capability of an established leading research group developing micro chemical reactors. The primary focus of a group at Hull, which consists of 8 academic, 7 post doctoral and 8 post graduate personnel, is to establish the theoretical and practical capabilities of controlling chemical and biochemical reactions within diffusion limited, non turbulent micron scale reactors. The purchase of the proposed Raman system will enable in situ monitoring of reactions to be achieved so complimenting the current analytical facilities available within the group available within the group. A number of general synthetic and catalytic schemes have been or are currently being investigated by the group and these support the evidence that localised concentration and electrical field effects create a high degree of reaction selectivity and chemical control in micro reactors. Specific chemical data of the type accessible from Raman spectra will be instrumental in substantiating such observations and will generate important data to support the development of advanced fluidic models incorporating kinetic, thermal and pressure gradients properties. Using the proposed Raman instrument micro reactors will be developed foe multi step and high throughout synthetic processes.
