We propose a new project to examine the use of MEMS in circuit board and chip/module level power systems, with two main strands: circuit protection (circuit breakers and fuses), and electrical power generation from mechanical motion, particularly at low frequency. In the former case, microsystems technology combines the low-cost fabrication of circuit protection devices with an opportunity to incorporate enhanced complexity and functionality, including electrical re-setting and programmability. In the latter, microsystems may allow the long term, battery-less powering of ultra-low power circuits such as those required in miniature implantible medical sensors and personal electronics. Neither of these topics has received significant attention internationally. Thus, the TeMPoS project offers an opportunity not only to add a new area to MEMS in the UK, but also to allow the UK to achieve an early lead in a new application area for Microsystems. TeMPoS is a collaborative programme between two research groups at IC: Optical and Semiconductor Devices, and Power and Control. It is supported by six industrial organisations. The workplan includes comparative analysis of candidate designs, detailed numerical simulation, fabrication and testing of prototypes, and trial implementation in the application systems of the industrial partners.
