|
The project will investigate user requirements, the design and deployment of mobile computing and communications devices from a user-centred perspective. Little research has been conducted on the 'use' of mobile communications devices around collaboration and work activities, and on how their design should learn from this. We focus our research on these areas.The research will form two core phases:The first phase will investigate the use of mobile voice and data connectivity in real world settings. Data collection will then be undertaken in detailed studies of work through ethnographically informed fieldwork and interviews.In the second phase, we will prototype a variety of mobile applications and hybrid devices to augment the mobile activities uncovered in the data gathering phase. These communications devices will build on recent developments in mobile computing, such as WAP (wireless application protocol), Bluetooth, Sun's Jini, Hewlett-Packard's JetSend, XML, 3G and GPRS, and location pinpointing technology.The research will allow us to better understand the requirements of mobile workers from technology and to understand how mobile technology can be effectively designed to support the needs of mobile users.
