Private ownership of the electricity industry means large-scale investments are often less attractive than smaller, modular generation with rapid construction times. Decentralised electricity generation allows power providers to place plant near the load rather than the source of fuel, with reduced costs of grid infrastructure reinforcement, reduced transmission losses and improved opportunities for use of 'waste' heat. New, 'cleaner' generation technologies capable of operating at high efficiencies at small sizes offer great promise, but their development, and integration with the existing network, pose new technological, operational, economic and regulatory challenges.This research programme will investigate the wide range of issues which bear on the prospects for decentralised generation, and with the help of industry partners, will scope down on key challenges. Engineering models will be developed at generation plant and electrical system levels, and techno-economic models will be developed too look at wider implications and barriers. A further aim will be to spin off additional, linked research; a number of such initiatives are already under development. This Platform is at the core of a major initiative by the new Centre for Energy Policy and Technology, and will benefit from close attention by senior advisory groups within IC and externally.
