It is proposed that a high speed digital recorder and illumination system to be purchased to support research undertaken at high speed transient phenomena. The system consists of a Kodak digital video recorder capable of taking 10,000 frames per second with a minimum of 50 microseconds exposure time per frame. The extremely low exposure times requires a powerful light source such as a pulsed 20 Watt Copper vapour laser (1 millijoule per pulse at 10 kHz, minimum pulse width 30 nanoseconds) which can be synchronised with the camera. Combined with the correct optics the system also creates a powerful Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) flow measurement system, which allows the investigation of high speed transient flow fields. This proposal is made on behalf of staff within the department of Mechanical Engineering, Bioscience and Bioengineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Physics of the University of Strathclyde and the Glasgow School of Dentistry.
