Each type of cardiac pathology produces characteristics sounds that can be differentiated with a high degree of accuracy by an experienced cardiologist. We have been investigating the characterisation of these sounds using digital signal processing techniques an attempt to develop a computer based heart sound classifier. Our initial investigations have resulted in the development of a singular channel system which consists of a laptop computer, signal conditioning circuits, and an electronic stethoscope. The next phase of the research will be to develop a multi-channel heart sound classifier which can further improve the performance of cardiac pathology detection. The multi-channel system heart sound classifier is not yet reported in the literature. The closest system is the one developed by Clinical Research Institute of Montreal in Canada to study the genesis and distribution mechanism of heart sounds and murmurs. Their system contains an array of 25 air-coupled microphones which can collect heart sounds at different locations of the thorax simultaneously. The team has made contact with the Montreal group for an academic visit and has been warmly welcomed.
