Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research aims to advance the technology of acoustography to enable rapid and reliable inspection of complex shaped aircraft components in a rough production environment. This is to be achieved by I) evaluation and validation of the current acoustography technology through a rigorous comparison with the conventional ultrasonic methods and other inspection methods like radiography and shearography. 2) Development of data pre-processing techniques to increase the sensitivity of defeat detection thereby achieving adequate feature representation in the acoustographic images for defect interpretation. 3) Development of prototype hardware platform and a novel software tool for automatic registration of acoustographic images with the three-dimensional component CAD model thereby providing a visualisation environment for characterisation and measurement of defects in complex aircraft components. 4) Performance optimisation and delivery of a final specification for the design of a practical acoustographic system for rapid inspection of complex aircraft components in the manufacturing environment.
