Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed Geographical Information Systems / Computer Aided Design (GIS/CAD) research laboratory aims to underpin a cluster of research programmes centred on spatial analysis, modelling and visualisation of urban and regional systems. Within the overall theme of 'integrated assessment' for regional sustainability, forthcoming projects include urban and regional-scale analysis and modelling of land management, urban regeneration, rural development, public health and climate change impacts. These and similar projects build on the extensive database of the current 'Regional Interactive Sustainability Atlas, as prototypes for application to other cities and regions in the UK and EU. There is also a range of community-scale projects in preparation, using global positioning technology for user-driven data collection; and national- and EU-scale projects, building on the regional experiences of spatial analysis and modelling, with applications to spatial development and appraisal techniques. The proposed GIS/CAD laboratory will considerably enhance the physical capacity of the school to carry out this programme of spatial analysis, modelling and visualisation. The school, with a multi-disciplinary approach, several Centres of excellence, and substantial links to the public and private sectors, is uniquely placed to take forward the theme of regional sustainability with a wide range of research outputs and applications.
