This research is in the expanding and interdisciplinary field of mathematics applied to medicine and biology. Realistic modelling of complex biological systems involves intensive computations and large datasets, requiring high-performance computers. The project focuses on four aspects of mathematical and stochastic modelling in biomedical sciences and involves collaboration with research users.Realistic mathematical models for the growth of tumours in three dimensions will be developed and accurate numerical solutions obtained, with application to ductal carcinoma, growth and symmetry-breaking of spherical tumours and vascular tumour growth. Mesoscale models for the dynamics of DNA molecules will be constructed and validated against timescales than possible with molecular models. Spatial-temporal modelling of medical images will be explored, including contrast-enhancing MRI brain scans of stroke patients. The development and application of methods for statistical inference for stochastic epidemics in structured populations will be studied, using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods and pseudo-likelihood methods, with application to influenza and measles.Finally, connections between these four projects will be explored.
