The equipment comprises a source of femosecond (fs) optical pulses at near infra-red wavelengths. It will be used by participants in the new Advanced Technology Institute for basic and strategic research on the dynamics of semiconductor optoelectronic devices and materials, and microwave and millimetre-wave (MMW) electronics, with application to broad-band communication. The fs pulse capability bridges the research areas of recently appointed staff (2 professors and 2 lecturers). It both enhances existing projects and allows entirely new experimental research areas to be studied, including:* Semiconductor lasers and optical amplifiers, where the gain of fs propagating pulses will be measured to study limiting effects of the gain nonlinearity. The unique, unexplored material GaInNAs, attractive for 1.3 micron vertical cavity lasers, will be studied.* The transport of photogenerated electrons under strong non-equilibrium fields in quantum well lasers and modulators excited simultaneously at TeraHertz and optical frequencies.* Novel photodetectors ranging from nanostructure avalanche photodiodes with suppressed noise-factors to very-high bandwidth travelling-wave heterojunction phototransistors for radio-over-fibre applications.* Optical sampling and imaging of MMW devices and circuits at frequencies >>100GHz, using microfabricated electro-optic probes to enhance the accuracy, bandwidth and spatial resolution.
