Summary on Grant Application Form
Our JREI application will ask for a fully computer controlled laser ablation equipment, which can be coupled to the latest generation of trace element analysers (ICP-TOF-MS). This combined system is the ideal analyser for trace element analysis in ablated solid material. The laser ablation system can be applied to a variety of different solid samples (e.g., minerals, bones, glass, cement, electrophoretic gels, thin sections of organs, archaeological and forensic samples). The nature of possible projects are highly interdisciplinary and so different sources of research income can be exploited with significant advances in technique and expansion of research frontiers.* The interaction of trace elements with biomolecules in metalloenzymes and the spatial distribution of bioaccumulated metalloids in biological tissue (e.g., in arsenic-eating sheep) will be helpful to understand antagonistic and synergistic effects of metals in biota.* Isotope ratio measurements for metals and metalloids to evaluate the involvement of biological processes in the genesis of minerals in particular from extra-terrestrial sources, e.g., clay minerals from Mars* Resolving microchemical variations in reservoir to impose predictions of basinal fluid migration and enhance hydrocarbon recovery.* Engineering will provide expertise on laser engineering and ablation modelling to predict and control fractionation effects and to enhance spatial resolution and sampling precision* Identification of interphase relationships of different materials (e.g., glass and cement) using information about submicroscale spatial distribution of trace elements.
