Summary on Grant Application Form
Real polycrystalline materials are complex, inhomogeneous collections of highly anisotropic crystallites, with mean behaviours which sometimes approach the isotropic behaviour typically assumed in practical applications. However, many aspects of their behaviour can not be understood without taking into account their inherently inhomogeneous behaviour The aim of this project will be to establish how the development of intergranular strain varies for different crystallographically orientated grains within a polycrystal as a function of the deformation mechanisms and level of constraint. This will be achieved by a combination of neutron diffraction experiments and self-consistent polycrystalline modelling. The results will directly improve our understanding of microscopic deformation modes in metals, and the interpretation of diffraction measurements of internal stress. In particular this project will investigate the effects of changes in constraint to deformation resulting from texture, multiple phases and low symmetry crystal structures.
