Summary on Grant Application Form |
In the past there has been relatively little research into the way that children perceive the function of engineering features on the road and how they interact with them. A recent study at Middlesex University showed that children sometimes misperceive the function of road markings os islands and may attribute a higher degree of safety to them than is justified. Also, children are often frustrated by their lack of control over driver behaviour where it does not confirm to the child's rule-based approach which this may sometimes lead to inappropriate behaviour. In addition, children's choice of crossing points is sometimes affected by their perception of a shortest route and also social activity that may encourage them to cross at inappropriate locations. The proposed study aims to reveal how children's perceptions of the road environment affect their crossing behaviour and highlight issues to be addressed by road safety education or by the design and positioning of appropriate safety measures.
