Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research team will initially compile an extensive literature review. This will allow the experimental methodology to measure the legibility and conspicuity of emergency escape route sign to be developed. An assessment of an extensive range of features of signs including; luminance, luminance contrast, uniformity, angular size, text style, format of geographical symbols and a range of internally lit and externally lit sign technologies will be carried out. Following a pilot study a series of laboratory tests will be carried out. This will involve a test panel of at least 24 normally sighted people and at least 24 visually impaired people (VIP's). The VIP's will be selected to include a range of eye pathologies. The result of the tests will be analysed and evaluated and design guidance will be formulated from the data analysis. The findings of this project will be made available to those involved in the drafting of national and international standards. A web page will be created and conference papers and academic papers in refereed journals will be produced.
