Summary on Grant Application Form |
This is a proposal to enhance device processing and measurement facilities in order to accelerate implementation of the University's strategy to develop interdisciplinary research, in this case at the interface between Engineering and Physics. These development will be based initially on research on GaN technologies for blue light emitting devices and high temperature high power electronics where there are immediate research and application opportunities. This part of the work is supported by a contribution of GaN wafers for research purposes by IQE plc, value 80k. However, the primary aim is to use these extended facilities to establish new interdisciplinary programmes of international standing in the areas of Micro Engineering Mechanical Systems, proteomics, genomics and soft condensed matter physics, and to extend photonics research into other biotechnology areas. To implement these plans it is necessary to purchase an electron beam lithography system and evaporator, together with measurement facilities including a streak camera to enable studies of molecular dynamics to be undertaken. These development build on previous and current University investment in facilities and new staff, bringing substantial added value to new EPSRC investment.
