A Focused Ion Beam Microscope will be purchased and commissioned. The equipment will be housed in the Central Electron Microscopy Unit (EM) in Elmwood Mews (close to the main University campus). This site offers an ideal environment in terms of low vibration and electromagnetic noise levels. It also integrates the new microscope with current central facilities. The facility will be managed as part of the new microscope with current central facilities. The facility will be managed as part of the EMU, with financial responsibility taken by the School of Maths and Physics.Maintenance contracts on the FIB will be met by adopting an hourly usage charge, as is in place for existing EMU microscopes. The University funds two full-time support staff for the EMU, as well as a part-time secretary, and these staff members will effect day-to-day management of the FIB. Larger management issues will be dealt with by the EMU users committee.The FIB will be used to enhance a wide variety of research programmes across the Physical Sciences, Engineering and Life Science areas of the University. Several features of the FIB will make it an invaluable research tool:(i) its capabilities to cut trenches and staircase structures, rotate and image and chemically map at very high resolution.(ii) its capability to trim structures far below the resolution obtainable by conventional patterning(iii) its capability to reliably fabricate lamellae with large areas of electron transparency for subsequent HRTEM investigation.
