Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal is the University of Liverpool's response to the EPSRC strategic research equipment initiative. Within the University the field of functional ceramics encompasses strong and established research in Chemistry, Physics, the Leverhulme Centre for Innovative Catalysis, the Surface Science Research Centre, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering and Clinical Engineering. The purpose of this proposal is to establish a suite of equipment, which will enhance existing programmes in this field and stimulate new multidisciplinary research in this rapidly advancing and technologically important area. The equipment requested falls broadly into the categories of growth and characterisation. Growth facilities are sought for complex oxide and nitride materials in the form of nanostructured, thin film and bulk crystals. The growth equipment will be used to develop a wide range and form of novel functional ceramics with enhanced electronic, magnetic, optical and chemical properties. The characterisation facilities identified will enable structure - property relationships of these materials to be explored in terms of surface and bulk phase, composition and microstructure. The key objectives of this proposals are to promote and strengthen multidisciplinary research at Liverpool in the synthesis, growth and characterisation of oxide and nitride functional materials.
