Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal is to purchase a supercomputer to underpin and extend interdisciplinary research activities in the recently formed Centre for Mathematical Modelling. New multi-scale modelling and simulation techniques are at the heart of the Centre's activity. Research will be undertaken in four main areas: advanced methods of continuum mechanics; multi-phase flows and computational fluid dynamics; microstructure modelling; and molecular dynamics simulation. The underlying theme will be the design of new tools for improved accuracy in modelling and simulation. There will be a strong focus on modelling at the interfaces between different traditional modelling regimes, and a unify8ing theme will be the need to design stable and efficient adaptive algorithms in the presence of a wide range of scales present in the problem. Examples of research initiatives within the four main areas of research would be(i) novel continuum computational procedures which extend the conventional finite element approach;(ii) smooth particle hydrodynamics for both fluids and solids;(iii) the growth and electrical properties of quantum dots; and(iv) applied statistical mechanics in molecular dynamics. The emphasis would be very much on research being carried out through the interdisciplinary teams in the Centre.
