Summary on Grant Application Form |
We are proposing to use the equipment allocation in four different ways.Firstly to produce a significant upgrades to the Origin 2000 supercomputer that was brought with funding from the JREI. This will enable our existing users to extend their activities but more importantly will allow a range of new multidisciplinary programmes across the range of science and engineering.Secondly we propose to initiate a new collaborative research programme in Cluster Science between the Surface Physics group, the Mass Spectroscopy team and the Computational Chemists that builds on the expertise of all three groups.Thirdly we propose to purchase two, state-of-the-art, pieces of equipment that will produce University wide facilities. The confocal laser scanning microscopes will be based in Chemistry and the atomic force microscope in Physics but both will be available across the university to underpin new multidisciplinary activities.Fourthly we propose to significantly enhance equipment that has been purchased with JREI funds and that form part of the portfolio of two of the groups that have attracted major grants from EPSRC. These enhancements will enable the use of the equipment to be extended to others areas of the University in collaborative ways.
