The application is for testing equipment which will enhance the infrastructure of the Surface Engineering Group at Salford. The Group has the largest and best-equipped magnetron sputtering research laboratory in UK academia, including tribology rigs and modern nano, meso, and micro-hardness testers. However, the Group's scratch tester is now more than ten years old, lacks modern ancillary equipment, and is increasingly unreliable. The application is for funds to replace this tester by a state of the art system allowing various modes of scratch and wear testing, acoustic emission monitoring, in-situ microscopy, with computer controlled data acquisition and testing.If the bid is successful, the instrument will generally enhance the Group's facilities for mechanical testing of thin film systems. It will also contribute to research being done under two existing EPSRC projects and to a research programme on the mechanical and tribological properties of multilayer coatings, which is about to start in collaboration with the external sponsors of this bid. In addition, it will contribute to a combined finite element and experimental study of mechanical failure of thin film systems, which will use an advanced finite element model developed by the Salford Group.
