Noise, vibration and harshness in passenger vehicles are a major influence on the commercial success of a product and a great deal of work has taken place to better understand the complex dynamic systems that make up any car. At the University of Bath a combination of experimental and theoretical analysis has been completed on passive suspensions, active suspensions and sophisticated engine mounting systems. This work was made possible by the donation in 1990 by Vickers Systems of hydraulic components that were built on a four-axis vertical input road simulator with a value estimated at over 250,000. This facility has supported many postgraduate programmes of work that have resulted in numerous publications and six PhDs however the system performance is now somewhat limited and the hydraulic system is outdated. This request concerns the replacement of the hydraulic valves, control system and NVH analysis software in an existing vertical input four-axis rig in order to make it state of the art once again. Such an update would enable continued research into active suspension, engine mount dynamics and NVH currently underway with Jaguar cars, Avon Vibration Management and the European Commission. The cost of the update is relatively low and a fraction of the cost of a new facility.
