Summary on Grant Application Form |
A series of pressure vessel steels and welds for nuclear applications will be subjected to a systematic programme of neutron irradiation's. These will be examined by a variety of analytical electron microscopy and mechanical testing techniques. The information obtained will be used to validate neutron irradiation-induced and thermally-induced impurity intergranular segregation models. Detailed studies will be made of the validity of mechanical property data obtained from sub miniature ball-punch tests. The project fits into the materials research issues theme, concerning itself with materials property degradation due to neutron irradiation and the resulting environmental impact that will be achieved if reactor pressure vessel embrittlement is reduced. The project will enable assessors more confidently to make predictions relating to life enhancement of existing reactor systems and will give guidance on design and materials selection, particularly in the regions of welds.
